The idea of capturing rain water and storing it for use later is not a new concept. Records dating back thousands of years demonstrate civilisation depended on it - right up until the Victorians began building the mains water supply system we relied on rain water to top up our local needs.
With the ever growing demand and expense of processing water for potable use, it makes ecological and financial sense to harvest rain water whenever possible.
Rain water harvesting systems allow you to replace mains water with water collected from the roof. The water is stored and then distributed to non-potable applications inside and outside the property. If the water storage drops to a low level it is usually topped up from the mains supply.
There are several options but the two primary systems are the gravity fed system and the direct system.
Each project is unique - roof area, occupancy, toilet flushing, washing machine and external uses all play a role in the design of a system.
